Exploring Greek Islands

By: Maria

If you too, are on the verge of purchasing a ticket sans detour for Greece, prepared to indulge in the endless sun and see, here’s a secret: Apart from the bold and notorious Mykonos and Santorini, there’s a plethora of picturesque islands waiting for you, so reconsider your destination. For starters here are some breath-taking islands, well worth a paying a visit:
1) Crete - The country’s largest island offers it all. From high mountains to climb to golden beach to swim in, there’ll never be a dull moment. Crete is celebrated for its distinctive cuisine (don’t miss out Dakos, Kalitsounia and Kserotigana!), traditional music and clean waters (here you can find the world’s 100th best beach, Falassarna). For a cosmopolitan yet authentic experience try Chania, while for a more peaceful, low-key trip opt for Rethymnon. Also, if you’re into ancient civilizations, Herakleion is a must, with its ruins of Minoan culture as well as its great aquarium and shops.
2) Zakynthos - If you’ve been around tumble long enough, chances are you’ve not missed the majestic beaches of Zakynthos. The island’s little mountain villages offer a unique experience of Greek hospitality coupled with delish local dishes. The island is well-known for its historical monasteries as well as the endangered Caretta-Caretta turtles which are to be found throughout the coastline.
3) Paros - With its seductive cycladic beauty and the characteristic white and blue houses, Paros caters for party-lovers and peace-seekers alike. Local beaches are ideal for all kinds of water-sports, especially kite and wind surfing. Make sure to also visit Parikia, for its beautiful byzantine church and its romantic castle.
4) Milos - The island is often referred-to as “The island of colors” thanks to its emerald waters. Visit Milos for its splendid beaches, with many different combinations of sand, rock and shells. Explore the ancient theater, the wind-mills and enjoy an once-in-a-life-time sunset.
Since i’m Greek, if you do decide to visit any of these islands or frankly whatever place in Greece don’t hesitate to message me :) I can help you with everything!
